On Friday, I took the day off to take advantage of the weather, for a drive to see the tulip festival a couple of hours east of the city.
Along the way, we stopped at a heritage village, built on the edge of the Fraser River.
To avoid floods, the main buildings and houses were built on stilts. The general store also was at the height of the railway running past it, making it easy to bring in supplies.
Great little log cabin!
The corners were built with dovetail joints.
After that, we arrived at the tulip field. It was amazing to see!
These tulips are being grown for their bulbs, which will then be planted in greenhouses, where the blooms will be harvested for sale. Incredibly, the flowers that we saw will just be cut off and discarded, so that the plant will focus its energy into growing the bulbs!
The farm decided to open the field to visitors while the blooms are at their best, and in the 10 years that they've been doing this, the event has grown in popularity, with 20,000 visitors last year. I just saw that attendance this year was MUCH higher than they expected, and they've had to close early, due to the car traffic clogging the roads! We're so glad we went on Friday!
Nice Canadian theme here!
(no, it doesn't actually go on and on!)
From there, we headed to Harrison Hot Springs for lunch and a walk on the beach, though the weather was starting to get cool. We were lucky to get as nice weather as we did - the forecast hadn't sounded very promising.
Yesterday was Jenn's birthday, and we spent part of it visiting the art gallery for an exhibit of Impressionist paintings, including Cézanne, Degas, and van Gogh, as well as an exhibit by the Architect who will be designing the new gallery to be built in the next few years.
One floor of the gallery was closed, while they prepared the next exhibit - it was interesting to see the behind-the-scenes work!
This looked like an interesting piece - hundreds and hundreds of wooden stools, assembled in a pile. Hmmm....
It's been a good long weekend - I'd like to take more Fridays off!

Those tulip fields!! Does make me a little sad that all those gorgeous tulips are going to waste, but it's so beautiful. Looks like you had a fun weekend. Did you go sit in the hot springs?
