On Saturday, Mountain Equipment Co-op (outdoor sports store) had a demo day, where they had a whole bunch of kayaks at the beach, and anyone who wanted to could sign up (for free), and wander around, trying out whatever boats they felt like. I met up with a friend with whom I've gone kayaking a few times, and he's on the hunt for the "right" boat for himself. He's very knowledgeable about all the different kinds and their subtleties, so it was very interesting! We'd grab a couple of boats, and paddle out a couple hundred yard, getting a feel for the kayaks, and getting a little bit of a ride on the waves coming back in. We tried 5 or 6 boats each, and found a couple that we'd like, if we had a few thousand lying around. He's pretty close to buying one. I'm not. We're planning on getting out on the water for a few hours on Sunday, in a couple of the boats we liked best, and see what they're really like.

On the way home from the beach, I came across a bike park, with a whole bunch of jumps. I restrained myself, knowing that while I may make it over at least the first jump, it may not have been a very smooth landing. I'll have to come back sometime when people who know what they're doing (and on the right type of bike) are having their fun on it.
Sunday I met up with Jenn's fellow photographer at their studio, to help install a ceiling fan (a must, with this incredible heat wave we're having).

I didn't get it quite right the first time - can you imagine why? There's another switch (on the part that's hanging down), and I was taking power from that circuit, so the fan only ran when the light switch was on. I went back today on my way home, and got it working as intended.

A few weeks ago, when my parents were on their way through here for their cruise, the hydrangeas under our living room window were just starting to show some colour. Since then, with the cool rainy weather, they had not progressed beyond that. Now with the heat (all the way up to 27°!!), they've been starting to show some more life. Jenn suggested that they liked being talked to. I couldn't think of any topics that I thought would be enjoyed by a plant, but they seem to be coming along despite that.
