Holidays catch-up

A few things I haven't posted about, from over the holidays (and by holidays, I'm counting up to now, even though I was back in the office for two days last week).

We went to see the lights at Burnaby Village Museum.

They had a 'treasure hunt', where you searched for the things from 12 Days of Christmas - for the 8 maids a-milking, they had these lit up figures.
The carousel was in high demand.

On Christmas day, to counteract the constant supply of junk food, we went for a long walk along a disused railroad track that runs through part of the city.  Some of the sights along the way:

A building that someone tried to save, but alas, the tarp that protected it was blown off some time ago, and the building has probably deteriorated past its usable condition.

This hedge was amazingly dense!!  And perfect!

Some creative gardening along the way.

During the holidays, we went to see another Vancouver Giants (WHL) hockey game - it's a great atmosphere, and good hockey!

New Years Day, we went to English Bay to see the annual Polar Bear Swim - more than 2500 people went for a swim!  And many more than that came to watch and cheer them on!

Yesterday's walkabout took us past the City of Vancouver composting demonstration garden, with this sweet little cob hut, made with straw, clay, sand, and dirt.  The gate, which is counterweighted, and can easily be pulled up or down, is made of old gardening tools - rakes, pitchforks, shovels, etc.  Someone did some great work on both of those!

And that brings me up to date!

The Burnaby Village museum looks really cool. Are those actual shops, or just for show?

Hard to believe it's that warm and green (relatively speaking) just a short plane ride away ...

The shops are mostly just for show, but there's a cafe just to the left of the "Home Bakery", the print shop is functional (they print their own flyers), and the blacksmith shop gives courses on smithing.

You're welcome to come see the greenery any time! :-)
