Art & Art

I was on my own this weekend - Jenn has gone to see her family again - one of the great advantages of living just a train ride away! She had been to the Musee des Beaux-Arts to see the Chinese Terracotta Warrior exhibit with her French class a couple of weeks ago, so I took the opportunity to play catch-up, and went to see it on my own yesterday.

The museum consists of several buildings, old...

and new.

Photos were not allowed in the Terracotta Warriors exhibit, so instead, here's a photo of some of Napoleon's clothing, including one of two hats he wore at Waterloo.

Today I caught the last day of that Underground City art display that I mentioned last weekend.
There are a lot of great spaces along the way, including this atrium with a 60' high ceiling, and a fountain that occasionally shoots up to the top.
A tree made of discarded plastic pipes and garden hose in another atrium.

I'm not quite sure what the story the artist is telling, but I like the cutouts in sheets of stainless steel, with a layered effect.

The artwork varied from temporary works - papier mache lily pads, piles of logs - to permanent pieces.
A chandelier made of hundreds of coloured glass tubes.
Coloured fluorescent tubes replace the usual white ones, creating the effect of a sunset as you walk through it - I loved that one!
A decidedly low-tech piece - made of coloured duct-tape!
Some of the tunnels themselves are fascinating - this one must have been cut through an old bank vault, or something like that.
You could see all the rebar and steel plates inside the wall - very interesting.
The shortest distance between two points is a straight line, but that's not always the most interesting!  My meanderings through the exhibit were a bit longer than the advertised 6km - though today was supposed to be the last day, some of the places along the way had already removed the signage, and I got lost a few times.  But then I'd end up somewhere like an atrium where a section of the Berlin wall is displayed, and the diversion becomes worth it!

Can't wait to see jenn's "the" shot! Will be about the only cool thing about all that snow far as i' m concerned (although your photos were very lovely, I'd just rather palm trees).

Very cool underground exhibit thing. I don't get "pile of logs" art though. I see kids making stuff like that in the park practically every day.

Love these pics. Also the snow ones (sort of - I'm with Sio on the palm trees). I was also going to comment on Jenn's "the" shot... when/where can we expect that to be featured? Maybe next year's Christmas card??

Your new office doesn't look bad at all. What happens if you miss the school bus?

I'm pretty sure Daniel has to go to the principal's office with a tardy slip.

Love the art. The tree is very Avatar-ish. :)
