Last weekend, we went for a drive in the country, east of town. There's something called "Circle Farm Tour", which is a self-guided tour of farms and historical sites in the area, using a downloaded map highlighting a bunch of places.
We started at Fort Langley, which began as a fur-trading post, and when the fur trade died out, it became a salmon trading post. It's also the birth-place of B.C., where Sir James Douglas declared it a Crown Colony.
Salmon were packed in wooden barrels for export, and a lot of them were exported to Hawaii, of all places!
The blacksmith did a bit of a demonstration - pretty fascinating to watch!
I'm not sure which would make me lose more sleep: having that hanging over my head, or the need to have it so close at hand.
Another place was a goat farm, where they make goat cheese. They also had a few Llamas in the pasture, which, strangely, guard against coyotes!
After sampling (and buying) a bunch of their cheese, we had a look at the steps in the process, from milking through to forming the wheels. The cheese was so good! Now we're trying figure out how we'll justify driving out there every couple of weeks for more.
We visited 5 places, including a turkey farm where we got some fresh turkey pepperoni for a snack, and sausages for dinner, as well as a berry & produce farm where we got some excellent corn, so we had a delicious dinner, after an interesting day in the country.

Mmm...there's nothing like good food from the country. I wish we could do that everyday.
