New Year's Day walk

To start the year off right (and as penance for all the chocolate and candy we've been devouring), we went for a 2 hour walk around the Stanley Park sea-wall.

Along the way, we passed by the 9 o'clock gun, which fires at 9pm every night. It was started around 1898, as a way to let ship's captains synchronize their chronographs.

They mean it!! My office is just across the water from it, and when I work late, if I forget the time, I have a very clear reminder!!

Further along is Siwash Rock, a very prominent, isolated rock, which according to First Nations legend, was a brave warrior who was rewarded with being turned to stone. Couldn't they have just given him a nice gold watch instead?
