On Tuesday night, we went up Mont Royal, for movie night, a bunch of short films featuring Mont Royal. It was a beautiful evening for a walk up there, and neat to see some of the historical footage of the place.
A self-portrait. Gotta love the long shadows of dusk!
Beaver Lake, on the mountain.
Yesterday we went out to the end of Lachine Canal (precursor to the St Lawrence Seaway), to see the Fur Trade and Lachine museums.
The Fur Trade museum is in an old warehouse, built in 1803, which was where the voyageurs brought their furs, for shipment to Europe. The canal beside it was built in 1821, and allowed ships to sail much further up-river, making the warehouse obsolete.
Some of the furs on display - made me want a beaver coat of my own!
And a dashing top hat.
Nearby was the Lachine Museum, housed in the oldest building on the island of Montreal, Maison LeBer-LeMoyne, built in 1669. I don't think the fence is original.
Also on the grounds of the museum is a sculpture garden, with some pretty interesting pieces.
And on the drive home along the waterfront, an old windmill.
Each year in Montreal, a whole bunch of the museums and galleries open their doors for free, and there are buses running between them, also for free. As you may guess, this brings out the masses of people. Today was the day, and we managed to get to two museums, but abandoned another one, on account of a lineup of (at our best estimate) 1200 - 1500 people.
The first stop was a repeat visit to Pointe-à-Callière, which we had been to shortly after we got here. There were new exhibits, including a history of wine. Another display had some pretty cool artwork, made from everyday objects - quite imaginative!
Second stop was Musée du Château Dufresne, a gorgeous home built by an industrialist in 1915.
It had some amazingly ornate interior features - quite a place!

The amount of history there is amazing. The fur trade warehouse reminds me of Lower Fort Garry, and the top hat reminds me of a story someone just told me. One class at school went to Lower Fort Garry a few weeks ago, all tried on fur hats, etc., and they all got lice. Does your head feel itchy now?
I like the lake on the mountain.
Ew, now that you mention it........
I checked the tags on the furniture, S-L - I didn't see any from Dufresne.
